Roos To Face Rival Cougars, Newcomer Lancers In WAC Home Opening Weekend

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC volleyball (11-5, 2-0) looks to pick up its fourth and fifth consecutive wins this week when it welcomes in Chicago State (7-11, 1-1) and California Baptist (10-4, 1-1) to the Swinney Recreation Center.  The match with the Cougars will take place on Sep. 27 at 7 p.m., while the Lancers come to Kansas City for a 1 p.m. contest on Sep. 29.

About the Roos
UMKC knocked-off Utah Valley and Grand Canyon in the opening weekend of WAC play.  Melanie Brecka, a Lincoln, Neb. native, led the Roos, averaging 4.67 points, 4.00 kills on a WAC-best .449 hitting and 0.33 service aces per set last week in a pair of road victories to open WAC play. In a four-set win at Grand Canyon, she tallied 18 kills on 34 attempts with just two errors for a .471 hitting percentage. She also added one ace, five blocks and four digs. In the come-from-behind victory at Utah Valley, Brecka had 18 kills, including 14 in the final three sets, to go along with two aces. It was UMKC's first 2-0 WAC road weekend since Oct. 16 and 18, 2014 at NM State and UTRGV.

About the Opponents
The Cougars head into this week's action with a 7-11 season record and have produced a 1-1 mark in WAC play. Last week, CSU opened its conference slate on the road with a 3-2 victory at Utah Valley and a 3-0 defeat at Seattle U. Chicago State is led on the offensive end by senior Lauryn Dela Cruz (Provo, Utah/Timpview) as she is averaging 3.78 kills per set, while junior outside hitter Beatriz Palmieri (Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo, Brazil/Professora Carlina Cacapava de Mello) has tallied a team-best 16 service aces. Junior defensive specialist Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) leads the Green and White's defensive unit as she is averaging a WAC-best 5.91 digs per set which also ranks her fifth among the current NCAA Division I leaders.

The Lancers opened WAC play with a win over New Mexico State, while falling to UTRGV.  Tesa Oaks tops the squad with 226.5 points on the season, notching 198 kills, while Sydney Marks is at 140 kills, hitting .371.
