KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC Women’s Golf team is ready to tee it up at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships at the Oakbrook Golf Course in Lakewood, Wash., which runs from Thursday through Saturday. The Roos are searching for their first-ever conference championship, with their highest finish coming in 2017 and the second-place showing.
In the 2018 WAC Championships, the Roos placed fifth with a 48-over par 900 (298-306-296). Senior Cynthia Diaz Rueda, who is the only Roo with previous WAC championship experience, was a bright spot last season.
Diaz Rueda finished fifth overall – first as a Roo – in the 2018 event, with a five-over par 218 (75-71-72). Her effort tied the third lowest score in school history. She was named to the All-WAC Second Team and also honored on the 2017-18 Academic All-WAC team. Diaz Rueda has finished in the top five in both the 2017 championship (tied-fourth; 223, +13) and 2016 championship (fourth; 221, +5).
Diaz Rueda commented on the season and the WAC Championship.
“This season has been a learning process for my team,” said Diaz Rueda. “We pretty much have a new team (from last year) so we have spent quite some time getting adjusted and learning about each other's game. Everyone has certainly showed potential and we just need to minimize mistakes at the Championship to get something going.
“I am really looking forward to my last WAC Championship. It has truly been an incredible journey and I would really like to make this a special one.”
In the 2019 WAC Women’s Golf Coaches’ Poll conducted Tuesday, UMKC received 24 points to tie for fifth with 24 points. New Mexico State gathered six first-place votes as the favorite to win the championship in Lakewood.
