KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The forward trajectory of UMKC’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics continues in earnest with the launch of the Roo Athletic Fund (RAF). It is an exciting time to be a UMKC Roo, as Director of Athletics Dr. Brandon Martin executes an important component to his 100-day vision by creating an organized and structured manner in which to give to the Department.

The Roo Athletic Fund will serve as the primary annual fundraising arm for the UMKC Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. In addition to the Roo Athletic Fund, other areas to support include: the Roo Scholarship Fund, Sport Improvement Funds, and the Capital Improvement Fund. All funds are set to elevate the UMKC Athletics product both on and off the court. The Roo Athletic Fund will help allocate funds to areas of need that will benefit the holistic student-athlete experience, adding to the overall success of all sixteen teams.

“In the spirit of comprehensive excellence, now is the time to improve the infrastructure, resources, and funding for all of our sport programs,” says Dr. Martin. “My hope is that alumni, fans, and supporters across Kansas City commit to propelling UMKC Athletics to be a premiere mid-major Division I program. Together we can build a department which is not only competitive on the court, but developing leaders for life.”

Dr. Martin’s focus on the Department’s external unit has been a key component since his arrival in Kansas City on December 3. He has shored up staffing with three additional hires, and now will launch the Roo Athletic Fund.

To compete in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), Martin and others know UMKC needs to increase the number of donors to the Roo Athletic Fund. At the moment, UMKC ranks last amongst donors in the conference. “We are asking our student-athletes to compete and win championships, but we need to provide them with the support to do so,” said Dr. Martin.

While UMKC looks to improve the size of its donor base to advance its competitiveness, success has been sustained academically and among many Olympic sports. In the past two years, 11 conference championships or regular-season titles have been won in the sports of golf, tennis, track and soccer. UMKC’s student-athletes have sustained record high cumulative GPA of 3.35, while 40% of the students have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

By investing in the Roos Starting 5 campaign – with the goal of 500 new donors by December 31, 2019 – you are making a vital investment to further UMKC Athletics and provide the resources necessary to allow our student-athletes improved success on and off the playing field.

Your contributions have a direct impact on our student-athletes, from academic support and student-athlete welfare to the renovation of facilities and the ability to recruit and retain the highest caliber of student-athletes.

We are proud to be Kansas City’s only Division I institution. Now is the time to partner with us as we advance Kansas City’s great University forward.
