DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – UMKC’s dance team won the National Dance Alliance (NDA) Jazz Division I National Championship on April 7. The Roos scored 9.611 to claim the largest division at the competition, which featured 22 teams. The winning score marked the highest in UMKC’s history at the event, dating back to 2009.

"The team has placed second four of the nine years competing at College Dance Nationals with this being our first national championship win,” head coach Michele Talley said. “The program was rebooted nine years ago when the Roos competed for the first time, so I am beyond thrilled to be taking home such an honorable award in just a few short years. The last two years we lost by .05, so we were determined to up our game and change our style this year to bring something new and fresh. Our highest score until this year was a 9.43. We finished with a 9.611 in the finals. This was also the largest number of teams we have competed with on the national stage. We went into finals in second and beat the 2-time reigning national champion.

"We practiced five hours daily for two weeks leading up to the competition in addition to preparing for the Roos playing in the CBI Tournament. Lots of extreme dedication and hard work goes into winning a national title. We are honored to be one of the few teams to be able to call ourselves national champions."

The Roos finished ahead of James Madison and Sam Houston State in the top three. Click here to watch UMKC’s winning performance.

The annual NDA Nationals competition is the largest cheer and dance competition in the country. UMKC’s roster features three seniors, five sophomores and six freshmen to make up the youngest team in school history. There were only five returnees to the championship squad.

The national championships competition features over 1,500 teams from 45 states in various dance styles.
