KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC Athletics and Uber are teaming up this fall to offer free rides for UMKC students and fans who are new to Uber. As part of the partnership – the first of its kind in Missouri – Uber is making it easier to get to and from all UMKC Athletics events by setting up designated pick-up and drop-off areas at event venues, and offering a free first ride for new users.
“No matter the sport, UMKC fans are passionate about cheering on the ’Roos at every home game, and we want to give them the best experience possible,” said Carla Wilson, UMKC Director of Athletics. “Through our partnership with Uber, fans can conveniently get a ride within minutes to or from all of our contests.”
Students and fans who are new to Uber will receive promotional codes from UMKC Athletics throughout the 2016-17 season to redeem for a free ride (up to $20) to or from events, including men’s basketball games at Municipal Auditorium in the heart of downtown Kansas City. When fans open up the Uber app at a game, they’ll receive a message instructing them where to meet their driver outside the venue. Trips that exceed $20 will be charged to the credit card attached to the rider’s Uber account.
This is the first university athletic department partnership of its kind in Missouri. Uber has also partnered with other universities throughout the country, including Duke, Florida and USC.
"Our goal is to make it easy for students and UMKC fans to request a ride when they need it most. Whether their plans involve a night out celebrating a win, or they just need a more convenient option to get to and from the game, a reliable ride is now available at the tap of a button," said Andy Hung, Uber Missouri and Kansas General Manager.
The partnership will run through July 2017.
