KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The 2018-19 competition year has opened for UMKC athletics and with it has come an array of traditions demonstrating Roo pride. The traditions were led with the creation of words to the fight song to accompany the instrumental melody. Social media hashtags, Roo Blue Friday, singing the alma mater after every home event, the creation of a student spirit group called Roo Nation, and a new attendance rewards program through the UMKC Roos Athletics app are just a few other notable additions making their debut with the season ahead.

As a Division I athletics department, words to a fight song are vital for students, fans, alumni and community members to showcase school pride. Over the summer months, writing lyrics for the fight song became leading priority for the athletics staff.

Collaborating with offices across campus, the team dug into University archives to discover a version of the Kansas City University fight song, titled Kangarooters. There was not an exact date for this tune, but it is thought to have been created before 1963. Although the Kangarooter instrumental version is different from the current fight song melody, the athletics external team used these lyrics as a starting point and inspiration for the creation of the new fight song. The newly enhanced fight song will be a mainstay at all home athletics events from now and in to the future.

“Go Kangaroos

Fighting for the gold and blue

Win Kangaroos To Kansas City always true

Onward, forward, upward rising Loyal through and through

Stand up and show pride for your Kangaroos

Go Kangaroos Fighting for the gold and blue

Win Kangaroos To Kansas City always true

Onward, forward, upward rising Loyal through and through

Stand up and show pride for your Kangaroos”

The revamped fight song was put on full display over the past three days, where the UMKC men’s and women’s soccer teams hosted three games on the weekend. Fan engagement was exceedingly visible in the men’s soccer 2-0 exhibition victory over Rockhurst University, where a record-setting 2,471 attendees filled the stands and proudly filled the air with chants of the newly adopted fight song. In tandem with the new fight song, the singing of the school’s alma mater will be conducted after all UMKC home sporting events to bring all members of the Roo family together in a spirited embrace.

Additionally, several other on-campus tradition initiatives have been rolled out for 2018-19. #RooBlueFriday encourages all UMKC students, faculty and staff, fans and community members to wear blue attire every Friday, blanketing the campus and city with a sea of Roo blue.

The newly adopted UMKC hand signal was also on full display over welcome weekend festivities. Pictured below, the sign is performed by holding the index and pinky fingers up and meeting the ring finger, middle finger and thumb in front portraying the nose of a Kangaroo.

Beyond the value of being present for UMKC student athletes in competitive action, the UMKC athletics app now offers an exciting rewards programs for all patrons in attendance of home games. The app can be found on both android and iPhone stores by searching UMKC Roos Athletics. UMKC Students, faculty, staff and community members have the ability to check in to events through the app to gain points on their account. Various point totals unlock different prizes that increase in value as the points rack up. Rewards include free food and beverage items from select locations along with gift certificates that can be used toward Adidas apparel.

Lastly, students and fans are encouraged to display Roo Pride throughout social media channels using athletics hashtags. UMKC athletics staff will monitor and engage with all fans who utilize these hashtags, even rewarding fans with merchandise or gift cards to department community partners for participation. #TeamKC, #RooUp, #RooNationRising and #RooBlueFriday can all be used to show your Roo Pride and school spirit.
