About the Roos

UMKC (5-6-1) concluded their nonconference slate last weekend with contests against a pair of Missouri Valley Conference opponents. The team narrowly fell 1-0 to Illinois State before claiming a 1-0 victory over Indiana State.

The Roos are 31-22-4 all-time in WAC play as they enter conference play in the 2017 season. The team currently sits in second place in the conference with a .458 winning percentage as they enter conference play. UMKC has played exceptionally of late having won three of their last four decisions by a combined score of 7-1.

Maintaining Balance

The Roos have continued to give strong performances in all areas of play. The team ranks among the top half in the conference in goals per game, goals allowed per game and saves, in addition to leading the WAC in shutouts with five on the season. UMKC has consistently received contributions from their offense, defense and goalkeeping, and look to remain a strong balance during the conference schedule.

Roos Among Conference Leaders

The UMKC offense has been sparked this season by junior forward/midfielder Lexie Howard (Kearney, Mo.). Howard leads the Roos in goals (7) and points (17), and is also tied for the team lead in assists (3). She is also among the conference leaders in these categories, ranking first in points, third in game-winning goals, and is tied atop the leaderboard in goals with Seattle’s Jessie Ray. UMKC will continue to rely on Howard’s scoring presence as they take on conference foes in the coming weeks.

Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.), Reighan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.), Erin Roth (Eureka, Mo.) and Anna Lillig (Kansas City, Mo.) are also among conference leaders in various statistics. Mothershead currently sits in the top ten in assists (3) and points (9). Childers is also among the top ten in assists (3). Roth ranks second in conference in both goals against average (0.64) and save percentage (.833), while Lillig ranks fifth in saves (40) and fourth in save percentage (.784).

About the Wolverines

Utah Valley (4-9) enters the match with UMKC on the heels of a narrow 1-0 loss to Texas A&M. The Wolverines got off to a great start in WAC play last week, taking down conference favorite Seattle U by a 3-0 final score. The team comes in to the game on a significant cold streak, droppping five of its last six contests including a double overtime loss to Washington State.

The Wolverines are led offensively by sophomore midfielder Breanna DeWaal, who is the conference leader in shots (49) and also ranks among the top ten in the conference in goals (4) and points (11). A bright spot for the Wolverines has been their passing, boasting two players – Hannah Bruce (5) and Tori Smith (4) - in the top three in conference in assists. The team ranks third in the WAC in assists.

About the Redhawks

Seattle U (4-6-1) will match up with Chicago State on Friday before taking on UMKC. The Redhawks got off to a less than ideal start in conference play with a 3-0 loss to Utah Valley. The team has struggled to find its footing recently, going 1-4-1 in its previous six games. Seattle is carried almost entirely by their offense, ranking second in conference in goals per game and first in assists per game, while sitting next to last goals against average.

The match with UMKC will serve as an intriguing showdown between two of the conference’s prolific scorers in UMKC’s Lexie Howard and Redhawks forward Jessie Ray. The two are currently part of a three-way tie for the conference lead in goals with seven apiece on the season. Ray trails only Howard in points per game in the WAC.
