KANSAS CITY, Mo.-- The UMKC women’s basketball team (11-11, 5-4) looks to snap its three-game skid when the team heads to Phoenix, Ariz., to face off with Grand Canyon (5-15, 3-7) on Thursday, Feb. 14th at 7 p.m. CT.

#TeamKC Notes

  • Road Warriors - The Roos are 4-0 on the road in WAC play this year. Since Dec. 16th, UMKC has won five straight road games. This is the first five game road winning streak since the ‘89-90 season when the Roos won six straight on the road

  • Meeting in the Middle - With a 5-4 WAC record, the Roos sit in the middle of the pack at fifth place in the conference standings

  • About the Roos - Looking to bounce back after a week off at home, UMKC looked to stay near the top of the conference standings with a pivotal WAC showdown with California Baptist last Saturday. Both teams needed double overtime before deciding a winner but the Lancers pulled out the road victory at the Swinney Center with a crucial three-pointer with just 14 seconds left. Ericka Mattingly played a season-high 47 minutes while notching her second triple double of the season against the Lancers. The Roos have now fallen four games back of New Mexico State, who sits first in the WAC at 9-1.
  • Mattingly Continues to Roll - Junior guard Ericka Mattingly (Wichita, Kan.) delivered a historical performance last Saturday versus California Baptist, securing the third triple-double in UMKC history and her second of the season (28 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists). With her second triple-double, Mattingly is one of only five players with multiple triple-doubles this season in Division I women’s basketball. Mattingly has now scored 20 points or more in 14 games this year.  Mattingly’s stat line for the 2018-2019 season consists of averages of 19.3 points, 6.3 assists, 6.3 rebounds and a 81.4 percentage on free throw attempts. The Junior College All-American still stands at the top among the other prolific scoring guards in the WAC, as she is first in points (19.3), assists (6.3) and steals per game (2.8). If the season ended today, Mattingly would become the first player in the 57-year history of the WAC to lead the conference in points, assists and steals in a season. Mattingly was recently named WAC Player of the Week for her performances through Nov. 26-Dec. 2. In reference to UMKC history, Mattingly is on pace to break Penny Waggner’s season assist record (5.4 avg) set back in the ‘84-85 season. The scoring guard also ranks third all time in a season for free throws made at 131 for UMKC. Nationally, Mattingly ranks 35th in points per game (19.3), seventh for total assists (138), 25th for steals per game (2.8) and sixth for free throws made (131)

  • Team Rankings - As a team, UMKC now sits second in points (75.3) while garnering a spot at third in field goal percentage (42.2), rebounding (39.4) and three-point field goal percentage (31.9) in the WAC. Nationally, the Roos rank 44th for scoring offense (75.3) in the nation

  • Preparing for the Lopes - Heading into Thursday’s matchup with a 5-15 record for the 2018-19 season, Grand Canyon will look to avoid the season sweep for the second year in a row against UMKC. In the last game against the Lopes, UMKC dominated the second half and held Grand Canyon to 45 points, the lowest scoring outing for any opponent against the Roos this year. The Lopes will look to senior forward ShaRon Miller to control the paint against UMKC on Thursday evening. Miller ranks fifth in the WAC in field goal percentage on the year (51.9) and leads the team in scoring at 11.9 points per game. Freshman Venla Varis continues to be a force from beyond the arc as the guard ranks third in three-point field goal percentage in the conference (36.7). Forward Da’jah Daniel is first in rebounds per game (8.6) for the Lopes

  • Vigil Making a Name For Herself - Freshman forward Leilah Vigil (Montbello, Colo.) remains a physical presence in the post for UMKC in 2018-19. The Montbello, Colo., native recorded her ninth double-double on the season for UMKC (16 points and 15 rebounds) on Saturday vs. California Baptist. During conference play, Vigil is averaging a double-double through nine games with 13.0 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. In regards to rebounding, Vigil remains at fourth in rebounds per game (9.9) in the WAC while sitting in second for field goal percentage (54.5). Vigil was recently named to the Holiday Classic All-Tournament team with her performances against SIUE and LA Tech back on Dec. 20-21st. Vigil sits fourth all-time for a freshman in total rebounds for a season after Saturday’s contest (217) against the Lancers.

  • Spotlight Player - Freshman guard Emily Ivory (Davenport, Iowa) has been a force off the bench for UMKC all year with 61 three-point shots made thus far in 2018-19, which includes a school record eight three-pointers in the first WAC conference game against Chicago State back on Jan. 5th. Ivory ranks first in the Western Athletic Conference with 2.8 three-pointers per game. Going in depth in her shot selection, Ivory has made a splash beyond the arc all year as she now sits in second place for three-point field goal percentage in the WAC (39.1). Halfway through conference play, Ivory has a chance to break Veda McNeal’s single season three-point field goal made record (87) set back in the ‘92-93 season. Ivory sits in a tie for 35th place in the nation with her 61 three pointers on the year

  • Last Season - In 2017-18, the Roos finished 11-19 overall and 7-7 in WAC play.  On the season, UMKC picked up key WAC victories with an overtime win over Grand Canyon and sweeping the season series between UTRGV and Chicago State.

  • Up Next - The Blue & Gold continue their road trip and travel to Bakersfield, Calif., for a matchup with CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, Feb. 16th at 3 p.m. CT
