DENVER – UMKC women’s basketball seniors Aries Washington (Kansas City, Mo.) and Samantha Waldron (Omaha, Neb.) have been named to the 2017-18 All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Second Team, the league office announced Monday morning.

Washington and Waldron are both finishing up superb four-year careers at UMKC and have played a major role in the team’s success this season. Their contributions on the floor led the Roos to a fifth-place finish in the WAC standings, the highest finish since joining the league, and a 7-7 conference record, the best mark since the 2011-12 season.

“Both Aries and Sam have a tremendous work ethic that has earned them this honor,” commented head coach Jacie Hoyt. “I have watched them work on their craft, put the team on their back at times, and establish themselves as two dominating forces in our conference.”

The team’s leading scorer, Washington has been a dynamic offensive weapon in averaging 17.3 ppg, fourth-most in the WAC. The Kansas City native has proven to be a reliable scorer in all areas of the floor, shooting 44.4% from the field, 81.4% from the foul line and a team-best 37.1% from three-point distance. All three percentages rank among the top-10 in the conference, with her free throw and three-point shooting sitting in the top-five. Washington’s 5.4 rebounds per game checks in just outside the WAC top-10.

Waldron currently sits as the league’s 12th highest scorer in averaging 12.3 points on the season. She also has accounted for 4.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and a team-leading 2.3 steals per game that rank second-most in the conference. The senior guard has put together an incredible season behind the three-point line, leading the WAC with 79 makes from beyond the arc which sits second-most in UMKC single season history.

Both players hit the 1,000 career point mark during the 2017-18 season and now rank eighth and ninth respectively on the career scoring list for the program. Washington ranks among the program’s top-10 in career rebounds (560), free throw percentage (.801) and field goals made (479). Waldron ranks third in program history with 221 made three-pointers for her career (221) and also cracked the top-10 in career steals (153).
