Women's Basketball Signs Two More Standouts

KANSAS CITY, MO. - The UMKC women’s basketball program has announced the signing of two additional student-athletes to National Letters of Intent, announced today by Head Coach Jacie Hoyt.

Jada Mickens | 6’0 Forward | Hutchinson CC | Liberal, Kan.       

Mickens was a two-year starter and floor leader for Hutchinson Community College (Kan.) where she helped the program accumulate a 60-11 record. In that timeframe, she helped the Blue Dragons earn a bid to the NJCAA National Tournament the last two years, including a trip to the semifinals. She became only the third Blue Dragon in team history to earn NJCAA All-America honors in both seasons.

Mickens closed her Blue Dragon career ranked eighth on the all-time rebounding list (517), sixth in career blocked shots (71), 11th in all-time free throws (171) and 16th on the career scoring list (854 points). She averaged 11.0 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game while shooting 79.0% from the free-throw line last season.

 

Quick facts:

Coached in High School by Carter Kruger at Liberal High School… coached in junior college by John Ontjes… ranked as the No. 50th JUCO player and the No. 17th forward according to the Dan Olson Collegiate Girls Basketball Report and a 3.5 Star recruit by Brandon Clay & the JumpOffPlus …Daughter of Anitra West and has one sister, Jai Chapman… plans to major in forensic psychology and criminal justice.

 

Why UMKC?: “I just knew this is where I am supposed to be. The city, the team, and the coaches all played a huge part on my visit. I was meant to be in KC!”

Coach Hoyt on Mickens: "Jada is a natural born leader. She comes from a background that is wired for toughness. Her physicality and versatility will allow us to play the uptempo style we want to play at." 

Kyla Callins | 5’11 Guard/Forward | Butler CC | Liberal, Kan.

Last season, Callins helped Butler Community College (Kan.) to a 28-5 record, a Jayhawk East Conference championship, the program’s first-ever Region VI Tournament championship and only the second team appearance in the NJCAA National Tournament. She averaged 10.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.3 steals per game. The Wichita, Kan., native earned MVP honors at the Region VI Tournament after averaging 18.0 points per game.

Following her Region VI performance, Callins was named the NJCAA National Player of the Week. She was selected on the First Team All-Jayhawk Conference, All- Tournament Team and the NJCAA All-America Honorable Mention team. Prior to her sophomore year, the 5’11 forward was selected to the NJCAA All-Star Top-40 game in Atlanta, Ga.
