DENVER, Colo. – The UMKC women’s basketball team saw a pair of players receive preseason recognition at the Western Athletic Conference Media Day on Wednesday morning.

Samantha Waldron (Omaha, Neb.) and Kristen Moore (Chicago, Ill.) were both voted to the preseason All-WAC second team by the media. Additionally, Waldron received preseason second team All-WAC honors in a poll by the league’s coaches. The Roos were picked to finish seventh in the conference by the league’s coaches and the media as well.

“I am very proud of Samantha and Kristen for the recognition they received. They are two very hard working and deserving individuals and it’s an honor to be recognized by other coaches in conference,” noted head coach Jacie Hoyt. “However, we know that preseason rankings don’t mean anything come March so they, along with the rest of the team and staff, will continue to work hard and do whatever it takes to keep improving.”

Waldron, a senior guard from Millard West High School, was UMKC’s leading scorer from a season ago, averaging 11.8 points per game while adding 2.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. The Omaha, Neb., native also led the Roos with 30 steals and 34.2 minutes per game in the 2016-17 campaign.

Moore, a redshirt junior forward product of Homewood-Flossmoor High School, was another key contributor for last year’s UMKC squad. Moore finished second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.1 points per game while leading the team with 5.7 rebounds per game. Notable recognition was given to the Chicago, Ill. native for her performance in the 2017 WAC postseason tournament, earning WAC All-Tournament Team honors by averaging 21.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in UMKC’s pair of games.

The Roos will rely heavily on both of these standout players as they move through the schedule in Hoyt’s first season at the helm. The team returns four starters from last season and welcomes three incoming freshman to the program. UMKC will host a single exhibition match against William Jewell on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Swinney Recreation Center before hitting the road for the entire month of November.
