KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- UMKC Men's Basketball sophomore guard Brandon McKissic (Ferguson, Mo.) was honored Tuesday with recognition on the All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Defensive Team for the 2018-19 season, announced by the league office. The defensive award for a player is the first-ever in UMKC men's basketball history as members of the WAC, which began in the 2013-14 academic year.

McKissic tied for third in the conference with 1.5 steals per game. Overall, he swiped 43 steals on the year and averaged 10.8 points, good for third on the team. McKissic primarily matched up with the opponent's leading scorer and succeeded in locking that player down. For example, McKissic limited Grand Canyon's leading scorer Carlos Johnson to six points below his team-leading average in the 87-75 UMKC win on Feb. 14. He also frustrated Johnson into five personal fouls.

Besides his defensive efforts, McKissic has showed consistency all season long. He has started in 27 of his 29 appearances, averaging 3.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists and also shot 45.6% from the field. McKissic has notched at least 10 points in 18 games, including two over 20 points.

"This is a well-deserved accolade for Brandon," said UMKC head coach Kareem Richardson. "Over the course of the season, our staff felt he evolved as one of the best defenders in the league."

The St. Louis University High School (Mo.) product joins his teammates in the WAC quarterfinals as No. 7 seed UMKC faces No. 2 seed Utah Valley at 8 p.m. CST Thursday in Las Vegas at the Orleans Arena. The Roos head into the postseason with an 11-20 overall record.
