KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s and women’s basketball programs will host their Roo Basketball Gala on Thursday, Oct. 18 at the College Basketball Experience inside the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame at the Sprint Center in downtown Kansas City.
The sold-out event will be highlighted by a keynote address from Cuonzo Martin, the men’s basketball coach of the Missouri Tigers.
In addition to the keynote delivered by Coach Martin, UMKC Chancellor, Dr. C Mauli Agrawal will present his vision for UMKC and the athletics department to all in attendance.
Along with Chancellor Agrawal’s remarks, the athletics department will launch the Roos Scholarship Fund. The Roos Scholarship Fund members provide over 240 student-athletes with the opportunity to receive a top-tier education, develop life skills and compete athletically in both national and international competitions.
“Our gala will feature both the men’s and women’s basketball programs this year,” UMKC Men’s Basketball Head Coach Kareem Richardson said. “This change will be a great way to introduce both programs. We couldn’t be happier to have Coach Cuonzo Martin as our guest speaker. He knows what it takes to build high-character programs.”
Richardson enters his sixth year as head coach of the Roos and comes into the season with a young squad that nearly upset Grand Canyon a season ago in the WAC Tournament. During his tenure, Richardson has guided the Roos to the second most wins in a season in school history and UMKC’s first-ever trip to the postseason.
“I am very excited to showcase both our men’s and women’s basketball teams in such a unique and exciting atmosphere,” UMKC Women’s Basketball Head Coach Jacie Hoyt said. “The exposure and opportunity to help our teams and coaches connect with our fan base off the court is something that I know everyone in attendance will benefit from. The fact that all of the tables sold out so quickly speaks volumes to the support of our community, and to the success that I believe lies ahead for both programs.”
Entering her second year at the helm of the women’s team, Hoyt’s squad will take part in 29 regular season games this season with three coming against Power Five opponents. The schedule holds 14 home contests to be played at Swinney, including the third consecutive Roo Holiday Classic.
“We are thrilled to be able to have Chancellor Agrawal and Coach Martin speak at our gala,” Interim Director of Athletics Ursula Gurney said. “This is a great way to kick-off or basketball seasons and highlight our men’s and women’s teams to our fans and supporters. It’s going to be a great event!”
With all 30 available tables sold, the fundraiser will benefit the men’s and women’s basketball programs, as well as the UMKC Athletic department as a whole.
UMKC Athletics would like to thank the Roo Basketball Gala Committee for their support of the event.
