KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s basketball team (9-19, 4-7) picked up its third straight victory on Thursday night’s Senior Night, taking down Chicago State (2-26, 0-11), 76-67, at Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City.

The Roos started off the game cold from the field, falling behind 5-0, four minutes in, before quickly taking the lead after back-to-back baskets from Jordan Giles and Brandon McKissic.

The Cougars kept the deficit at two, but a 17-4 UMKC run, featuring a pair of McKissic threes, stretched the lead to 16 at 32-16.

An Isaiah Ross three extended the lead to a game-high 17 with 4:04 remaining in the half, and, after the Cougars trimmed the lead to 13, three Giles free throws closed the half, giving UMKC a 39-23 lead at the break.

Coming out of the locker room, though, the Cougars lit up the nets to take a 50-45 lead at the 12:46 mark.  UMKC, however, answered with a pair of Xavier Bishop free throws and a Ross three to knot the score at 50.

Chicago State reclaimed the lead with the game’s next basket, but that would be their last lead as the Roos notched 11 of the next 13 points to go ahead by seven with just over six minutes remaining.

Two threes from Broderick Robinson and two McKissic free throws then extended the lead to 10 at the 4:04, all but putting the game away for the Roos.

The Cougars could only close to within six down the stretch and Giles would put the finishing touches on the game with a layup from Bishop for the game’s final points.

In the contest, McKissic and Giles led the Roos with 17 points apiece, with Giles adding six rebounds and McKissic chipping in three rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Ross, meanwhile, was the third Roo in double figures, finishing with 14 points, including hitting 4-of-8 from three-point range, three assists and two rebounds.

Following the game, the Roos honored their three seniors, Robinson, Robert Knar and Noah Knight.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again next Thursday when they head to Edinburg, Texas, to take on UT Rio Grande Valley at 7 p.m. CT
