CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UMKC softball team is set to kick off the 2018 season this weekend in the Ramada UNI-Dome on the campus of Northern Iowa with five scheduled games in the event.
The Roos open play with a contest against South Dakota State on Friday, Feb. 9 at 10:15 a.m. CT before squaring off with Southeast Missouri State and Green Bay on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 8 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. CT. The team will match up with Drake and host Northern Iowa on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. CT on the final day of action.
UMKC returns seven starting position players from last year’s squad, including Preseason All-WAC selection Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.). Additionally, the team brings back their top-two pitchers in innings pitched with Lynsey Conner (Peggs, Okla.) and Andra O’Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) who both amassed over 70 innings a season ago.
The 2018 campaign will be the 12th season at UMKC for head coach Meredith Smith Neal. Currently sitting at 233 career victories, the 250 win mark is within reach during the season ahead. Seven newcomers are joining the 2018 team, including five freshman set to begin their collegiate career.
The Roos will make a trip south the following weekend to compete in the Madeira Beach Invitational from Feb. 16-18. Opponents include Eastern Michigan, Abilene Christian, UNC Greensboro, Georgia Southern and Massachusetts.
