Roos Succumb to Chippewas in Overtime Battle on Kansas City Day

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s basketball team (3-10) put on a show Tuesday night for Kansas City Day at Municipal Auditorium. In a game that saw a combined six-straight 3-pointers over a span of three minutes to send the game to overtime, the Roos were unable to overcome the visiting Central Michigan Chippewas (9-2), falling 92-86.

A jumper by Jordan Giles (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) on UMKC’s first possession helped the sophomore pick up where he left off from the previous game. Point guard Xavier Bishop (Springfield, Ill.) also continued his scoring ways, netting a 3-pointer moments later.

By the first media timeout, eight Roos saw action on the floor for head coach Kareem Richardson, as the Roos held the 7-5 lead.

Center Mo Ahmed (Tulsa, Okla.) scored six quick points off the bench for UMKC, while a made free throw by Robert Knar (Mundelein, Ill.) with 13:36 left in the first half gave the Roos their largest lead of the game at nine points.

UMKC continued to show depth, as 17 first-half points were scored by the Roos bench led by Ahmed and Brandon McKissic (Ferguson, Mo.), who each had six points apiece.

Central Michigan never led in the first half, while Bishop led the way for UMKC with eight points. Isaiah Ross (Davenport, Iowa) contributed seven points and Marvin Nesbitt Jr. (Chicago, Ill.) grabbed a team-leading six rebounds after the first 20 minutes of action.

A trey by Central Michigan’s David DiLeo helped the Chippewas close in on the Roos five minutes into the second half. A pair of free throws by DiLeo at the 14-minute mark gave Central Michigan the lead for the first time in the game.

A fast-break jumper by Marco Smith (Kansas City, Kan.), followed by a 3-pointer from the newcomer, pushed UMKC back out to a four-point lead. The two teams exchanged treys for nearly three minutes in a 3-point shootout, that including shots from long range from Smith and Bishop, as well as a trio from Ross to put the Roos out in front by six points.

A 7-1 run by the Chippewas to close the game forced UMKC to enter overtime for the first time this season. The Roos tallied nine points during the extra time, with the help of Ross and Bishop, but Central Michigan pulled away to hang on for the 92-86 win.

UMKC will return to Municipal Auditorium on Friday at 6 p.m. CT when it hosts South Dakota State.
