KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Javan White, a 6-10 transfer forward from Clemson University, commits to play for the UMKC men’s basketball program, announced head coach Billy Donlon on Thursday. White is from Ames, Iowa, and has one year of athletic eligibility remaining at UMKC after earning his undergraduate degree at Oral Roberts University and working on his graduate degree at Clemson University.
White began his collegiate career in 2015-16 at Oral Roberts. That season as a freshman, he played in 23 contests and averaged 4.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. He sat out the 2016-17 season as a redshirt and eventually started 29-of-32 contests in 2017-18. That year, he averaged a team-high 9.0 rebounds to go along with 10.2 points for the Golden Eagles. His 3.53 offensive rebounds per game ranked in the top 15 in the nation. He posted a team-best nine double-doubles, including a pair of 20/10 games. His 25 points against Florida Gulf Coast was a career-high.
He ended his ORU career with 425 points (7.7 avg), 373 rebounds (6.8 avg), 43 blocks (.78 avg), 36 steals (.65 avg) and shot 50.6 percent (173-for-342) from the field.
As a junior last season, he transferred to Clemson where he appeared in 31 games. He played 10-plus minutes in 10 contests for the Tigers. He collected a season-high 10 points in 16 minutes against Pittsburgh on Jan. 29, 2019. Overall, he averaged 2.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 8.4 minutes and shot 56.0 percent (28-of-50) from the floor.
“We are very excited to have someone of Javan's character and basketball ability join our program,” said head coach Billy Donlon. “He earned his undergraduate degree in three years and is completing his Master’s degree in one year which I think speaks volumes to his work ethic and value system instilled in him by his family, especially his mom Kelly.
“Javan, with work and determination, will compete for the WAC Player of the Year. He has a great skill set, basketball IQ, and high motor for the game. His decision has already helped us in recruiting other good players. Javan joining the Roo family is something our fans will be very excited about.”
In his time at Ames High School, White recorded averages of 13.9 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3.4 blocks per game as a senior. He was part of an Iowa State tournament qualifying team. He was named to the All-State Second Team as a senior. He left his prep career as the record-holder in career blocks (127), breaking former North Carolina Tar Heel’s star Harrison Barnes mark.
White plans to pursue a second Master’s degree from UMKC.
White joins Demarius Pitts in the 2019-20 signing class.
