The Roos opened their home slate with a commanding 110-59 victory over Haskell on Sunday to kick off the Gulf Coast Showcase that UMKC will be playing in Nov. 20-22. As a team, the Roos scored 33 points off of the Indians’ 28 turnovers. UMKC also snagged a program record 20 steals, led by newcomer Marvin Nesbitt Jr. (Chicago, Ill.) who grabbed six. UMKC’s bench scored 59 points, led by junior college transfer Mo Ahmed (Tulsa, Okla.). The 7-2 center tallied 18 points, and grabbed six rebounds, shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and was 6-of-9 from the free throw line.

UMKC was defeated 109-57 by the No. 7/8 Wichita State Shockers in front of a sold-out crowd on Nov. 10 at Charles Koch Arena to open the 2017-18 season. Isaiah Ross (Davenport, Iowa) led UMKC with a game-high 12 points. Broderick Robinson (Grand Junction, Colo.) and Aleer Leek (Juba, South Sudan) also scored in double figures for UMKC, while Robinson grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

Kareem Richardson’s troop features six returning letterwinners and welcomes nine newcomers this season. The Roos will look to the senior leadership of Robinson, as UMKC lost all five of its starters from 2016-17. Robinson, along with Xavier Bishop (Springfield, Ill.), played in all 35 games for the Roos last season, while Ross made an appearance in 34 contests. Richardson enters his fifth year at the helm of the Roos program.
