KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s basketball team (1-1) hosted Haskell (1-7) for its home opener at Municipal Auditorium on Sunday as part of the Gulf Coast Showcase that the Roos are set to play in Nov. 20-22 and defeated the Indians, 110-59.

UMKC took control of the game from the start with an 11-0 run over the first three minutes, courtesy of eight early points from sophomore forward Jordan Giles (Tuscaloosa, Ala.). The Roos held Haskell to zero points for nearly five minutes while forcing five turnovers by the Indians.

With 10 minutes remaining in the opening half, the Roos went on a 23-2 surge. UMKC closed the first 20 minutes shooting 52.6 percent from the field, 50.0 percent from 3-point range and 84.6 percent from the charity stripe. Giles matched his career-high 12 points, while Xavier Bishop (Springfield, Ill.) was a point shy of matching his career-high 17 points.

As a team, the Roos scored 19 points off of Haskell’s 14 turnovers in the first half before finishing the game with 33 points off of the Indians’ 28 misfortunes.

A jumper by Giles 27 seconds into the second half of action bumped him over his career high in the points column, as the sophomore finished the night with 21 points to lead the team.

Bishop knocked down a pair of free throws to give him a career-high 18 points, while he grabbed three of UMKC’s program record 20 steals. Newcomer Marvin Nesbitt Jr. (Chicago, Ill.) set career highs, shooting 5-for-6 from the field, and 1-for-2 from the free throw line, to finish with 11 points. He also grabbed five rebounds and led the team with five assists and six steals.

UMKC’s bench scored 59 points, led by junior college transfer Mo Ahmed (Tulsa, Okla.). The 7-2 center tallied 18 points, and grabbed six rebounds, shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and was 6-of-9 from the free throw line.

The Roos will play a pair of midweek games, starting with a trip to Kansas State on Tuesday, Nov. 14 before returning to Municipal on Nov. 16 to host Loyola at 7:05 p.m. CT.
