UMKC Aims to #SellOutSwinney Against Green Bay Wednesday in CBI Presented by FIVE FOUR

KANSAS CITY, Mo.UMKC men’s basketball (17-16) welcomes Green Bay (18-13) to Swinney Recreation Center on the UMKC campus for a 7:05 p.m. CT tipoff Wednesday in the College Basketball Invitational Presented by FIVE FOUR. The postseason contest marks the first in the 30-year Division I history of the Roos.

The game will be live streamed on and will also air on Sports Radio 810 WHB in the Kansas City area. UMKC Athletics is anticipating a large walk-up crowd so fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance.

First-team All-WAC selection LaVell Boyd (Chicago, Ill.) is averaging a team-leading 17.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.1 steals per game. Boyd scored 22 points – including 12 in overtime – to push the Roos past UT Rio Grande Valley in the first round of the WAC Tournament on March 9. Fellow senior Kyle Steward (Detroit, Mich.) averages 11.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest. He is averaging a team-best 16.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per outing over the last 10 games.

Green Bay was an NCAA Tournament team last year and finished in a tie for third in the Horizon League this season with a 12-6 mark in league play. The Phoenix are led by Charles Cooper, who averages 13.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

Opening Tip

·         UMKC is 17-16 overall and is making the first postseason appearance in the 30-year Division I history of the program in the College Basketball Invitational Presented by FIVE FOUR.

·         Senior guard LaVell Boyd was voted first-team All-WAC by the league's head coaches. He averages 17.9 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists.

·         UMKC went on a recent 5-game winning streak. It was the first time the Roos took five straight since winning 11 in a row from Jan. 3 - Feb. 3, 2005. UMKC had a 19.2-point average victory margin (87.2-68.0) during the run.

·         Throughout the winning streak, UMKC shot 48 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range. The Roos averaged 11.8 triples per game.

·         UMKC's 30-point, 102-72 victory over Seattle U on Feb. 11 marked the largest margin of victory in a conference game since joining the WAC prior to the 2013-14 season. It also tied the second-largest margin of victory in program history in a conference contest.

·         The Roos rank 37th nationally in 3-pointers (295), 44th in shots attempted from beyond the arc (797) and 50th in 3-pointers per game (8.9).

#TeamKC Notes

·         UMKC has drained 295 shots from beyond the arc this season, which broke the previous program record of 283 3-pointers by the 2007-08 squad.

·         UMKC is averaging 76.9 points per game, which is the fifth-best mark in program history and the highest scoring average since 1992-93. The 1990-91 team, led by 19.3 points per game by UMKC Hall of Famer Ronnie Schmitz, posted the best mark in school history with 81.1 points per game.

·         LaVell Boyd averages 16.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 64 career games (63 starts). He has drained 162 triples in that span, which ranks seventh in program history. He has scored 20-plus points 19 times and has reached double figures in scoring in 55 games during his 2-year career.

·         Boyd became the 11th member of the program's 1,000-Point Club in the WAC Tournament overtime victory against UTRGV on March 9. He became the first junior college transfer in program history to go over 1,000 points for his career.

·         Boyd's 126 assists this season are tied for the fourth-most in program history and are only five behind Quinton Day's record of 131 in 2006-07.

The winner of Wednesday’s contest will play the winner of Eastern Washington at Wyoming. The host school will be announced after the first round of the CBI Presented by FIVE FOUR has been completed.
