STARKVILLE, Miss. – UMKC men’s basketball (7-7) continues nonconference play at Mississippi State (8-3) of the SEC on Thursday night. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. CT at Humphrey Coliseum. A live stream of the game will be available via SEC Network Plus.

The Roos earned a 72-67 victory over the Bulldogs on Dec. 12, 2015 at Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City. Shayok Shayok registered 15 points and eight rebounds for the Roos while LaVell Boyd added nine points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. He finished 4-for-9 from the field and 1-for-4 from beyond the arc. Kyle Steward contributed nine points, three rebounds and two steals in last year's matchup.

Opening Tip

·         UMKC is 7-7 overall and is coming off of a 77-66 loss to UT Martin on Dec. 20 before taking a 9-day break from game action for the holidays.

·         LaVell Boyd led UMKC with a career-high 32 points against the Skyhawks. He finished 9-for-20 from the field and 7-for-12 from 3-point range, tying his career-high in triples established in his UMKC debut at Minnesota on Nov. 9, 2015. He was also 7-for-8 from the foul line vs. UTM.

·         Boyd was named WAC Player of the Week following his performance vs. UT Martin. In addition to the career-best point total, he added four rebounds, two steals and did not commit a turnover.

·         Boyd is averaging 20.2 points, 3.7 assists and 3.6 rebounds per contest. He ranks 11th nationally in total points (283), 15th in 3-pointers (43), 24th in field goals (91), 42nd in points per game (20.2), 47th in 3-pointers per game (3.07), 57th in 3-point field goal percentage (42.6) and 59th in made free throws (58).

·         The Roos rank 11th nationally in 3-pointers (137), 17th in 3-pointers attempted (356), 24th in 3-pointers per game (9.8), 62nd in steals (96) and 63rd in 3-point field goal percentage (38.5).

·         UMKC assistant coach Chris Hollender returns to Starkville, where he was an assistant coach for Mississippi State from 2012-15.

#TeamKC Notes

·         By shooting 38.5 percent (137-for-356) from beyond the arc, UMKC has recorded its fourth-highest single-season 3-point shooting percentage to date. The high is a 41.5 percent (148-for-357) mark by the 1991-92 squad that finished 20-8 and defeated Texas A&M (twice), Baylor and Creighton.

·         UMKC recorded a positive assist-to-turnover ratio in each of the last three victories over Southeast Missouri, South Dakota and William Jewell.

·         The Roos set a season-high with 18 assists in the Nov. 28 victory over SEMO. Those 18 dimes came on 25 made field goals.

·         UMKC went 2-1 at the Bill Frack Tournament Nov. 19-21 hosted by Bowling Green, including a thrilling 71-69, final seconds victory over the host Falcons on Nov. 19 and an 85-74 triumph over perennial mid-major powerhouse Murray State on Nov. 20.

·         Boyd averages 16.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 45 career games (44 starts). He has drained a team-high 124 triples in that span. He has scored 20-plus points 14 times and has reached double figures in scoring in 37 games throughout his 2-year career in Kansas City.

UMKC returns to Kansas City for a 3-game home stand beginning with a nonconference tilt vs. USC Upstate at 6:35 p.m. on Monday. Following that matchup, Western Athletic Conference play begins with New Mexico State at UT Rio Grande Valley visiting Municipal Auditorium on Thursday, Jan. 5 and Saturday, Jan. 7. The NM State contest will be televised by American Sports Network nationally and on KSMO-TV in the Kansas City viewing region.
