UMKC to Play Three Games in Three Days at Bill Frack Tournament

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – UMKC men’s basketball (1-1) will compete in the Bill Frack Tournament hosted by Bowling Green, which will include 3 p.m. CT games on Saturday, Sunday and Monday against the host Falcons (0-2), Murray State (1-1) and Green Bay (1-1) at the Stroh Center. Saturday’s contest will be available on ESPN3 via the WatchESPN app.

Kareem Richardson’s squad earned a 68-62 victory in the home opener vs. Drake of the Missouri Valley Conference on Tuesday evening at Municipal Auditorium. Senior guards Martez Harrison (Kansas City, Mo.) and LaVell Boyd (Chicago, Ill.) – both Preseason All-Western Athletic Conference selections – led the Roos with a combined 40 points. Harrison scored a game-high 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor, a 3-for-5 mark from 3-point range and 5-for-6 line at the charity stripe. Boyd added 18 points, including three baskets from beyond the arc.

Opening Tip

·       UMKC begins the Bill Frack Tournament hosted by Bowling Green with a 3 p.m. CT matchup on Saturday with the host Falcons at the Stroh Center. The teams have never met before.

·       UMKC claimed a 68-62 victory over Drake of the Missouri Valley Conference on Tuesday at Municipal Auditorium. The Roos got out to a 37-26 halftime lead and led for the game's final 28:14.

·       Martez Harrison (Kansas City, Mo.) paced UMKC with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting, 3-for-5 from 3-point range and a 5-for-6 line at the charity stripe. Harrison also recorded three assists, three steals and three rebounds. LaVell Boyd (Chicago, Ill.) added 18 points, three triples and four rebounds. Kyle Steward (Detroit, Mich.) contributed 13 points, including seven over the game's final 3:41, including a 3-pointer where he drew a foul, a follow-up lay-in with 1:14 left and a game-sealing dunk with 39 seconds left.

·       Kareem Richardson enters his fourth season as head coach at UMKC and signed a contract extension through 2020-21 during the offseason. For the first time during his tenure, he returns his entire coaching staff.

#TeamKC Notes

·       UMKC's roster features six seniors and six players that saw significant playing time last season, including three players that earned 13-plus starts.

·       Senior guards Martez Harrison and LaVell Boyd were both All-Western Athletic Conference performers a year ago and recently earned Preseason All-WAC recognition.

·       Harrison leads all current WAC players in career scoring (1,592 points), points per game (16.8), field goals made (482), field goal attempts (1,181), made free throws (505), free throw attempts (706), assists (376) and steals (156). He is one assist shy of tying another Kansas City product, Quinton Day, (2004-07), for the program record.

·       Boyd averaged 14.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game last season, his first with the program. He was named to the WAC All-Newcomer Team after leading the team with 81 made 3-pointers. Boyd shot 43 percent from the floor, 42 percent from 3-point range and a team-best 81 percent from the foul line. He was named WAC Player of the Week for the final week of the 2015-16 season after scoring a career-high 26 points at Chicago State.

Next Up

Following this weekend’s games, UMKC returns to Kansas City to host Arkansas Monticello on Friday, Nov. 25. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. CT at Municipal Auditorium. The Roos will then welcome in-state foe Southeast Missouri on Monday, Nov. 28 for a 6:35 p.m. CT start.
