UMKC Picks Up Hard Fought Win Over Runners

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (16-8, 7-3) notched a long and hard fought four-set victory on Thursday night against WAC foe CSU Bakersfield (11-12, 4-6), 3-1, in a 2:21 affair at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield, Calif.

Two Roos notched double-doubles in the victory, with Alicia Harrington finishing with 11 kills, 22 digs and three blocks and Alex Ratzlaff going for 10 kills, hitting .300, 15 digs, two blocks and two aces.  Tyrecia Lukes, meanwhile, was the third Roo with double-digit kills, adding 13 on a .370 hitting percentage with seven blocks.

In the opening set, the Roos fell behind by as many as five on several occasions, including lastly at 20-15.  Kills from Emma Dyer and Ratzlaff and several CSUB miscues, though, brought UMKC to within one at 20-19.  The two teams then traded service errors, before an ace from Kynnedy Myers evened the set at 21-21.  The two teams then went back and forth for the rest of the match with Bakersfield holding set point twice and the Roos reaching it seven times when back-to-back kills from Brooke Jacobs and Ratzlaff gave the first set to Kansas City, 32-30.

After Bakersfield evened the match at one set apiece with a 25-22 second set victory that was tied as late as 21-21, the Kangaroos went back in front with another victory in set three that went to extra points.

In the third set, the two squads again battled throughout as neither team gained more than a three-point advantage during the set, including late when the Roos trailed 20-17 after an ace.  UMKC, though, continued to chip away, getting kills from Harrington, Dyer, Lukes and Ratzlaff to pull even at 23-23.  The score was tied three more times the rest of the set, before a pair of CSUB errors sealed the 28-26 win for the Roos.

In the final set, UMKC fell behind early at 6-4, but notched six of the next eight points to go ahead 10-8.  The Roos then stretched the lead to five at 18-13, before Bakersfield’s final run closed the gap to 19-17 late.  UMKC, however, allowed just two more points as an ace from Ratzlaff and a pair of Harrington kills, including the match ender, down the stretch pushed the Roos to a 25-19 set win and a 3-1 match victory.

For UMKC, Melanie Brecka finished with seven kills, seven digs and three blocks, Dyer notched six kills and five blocks and Jacobs added six kills three blocks and two digs. 

In the back row, Rhegan Spiegel registered 16 digs, while Alli Schomers led the Roos with 31 assists to go along with eight digs and Myers chipped in 19 assists, six digs, two kills and an ace.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Saturday when they look to sweep the season series against WAC newcomer and current league leader California Baptist at 3 p.m. CT in Riverside, Calif.
