KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (15-8, 6-3) picked up a Western Athletic Conference victory on Thursday night when they beat Grand Canyon (9-11, 2-6), 3-0, at the Swinney Recreation Center.

Tyrecia Lukes led the offensive attack, finishing with 13 kills and a .632 hitting percentage, while adding four blocks.  Alicia Harrington, meanwhile, added 10 kills, hitting .368, with four digs.

In the opening set, the Roos jumped out to an early 7-1 lead on the strength of three Harrington kills.  GCU battled back to pull within one at 8-7 and maintained the one-point deficit at 11-10.  The Roos, though, would stretch the lead back to four at 20-16 after a kill from Lukes before Harrington ended the set at 25-20 with her fifth kill of the set.

UMKC pushed the lead to 2-0 after taking set two 25-16.  Midway through, the two squads were separated by just one point as the Roos led 10-9, but the next four went to Kansas City, stretching the lead to 14-9.  After GCU took two of the next three points, the Roos then reeled off the next three, getting two kills from Harrington during the stretch.  The Lopes would close to within five at 19-14, but UMKC notched six of the final eight points with Emma Dyer, Alex Ratzlaff, Kynnedy Myers, Melanie Brecka and Brooke Jacobs all accounting for kills during the run.

Kansas City then put the match away in set three with a 25-12 win.  The Roos again built an early lead, this time going ahead 7-2 after three straight kills from Lukes, Brecka and Harrington.  The Lopes would not threaten the rest of the set as Roos allowed just one point over the final nine points, with Myers capping the match with a kill.

For the Roos, Brecka finished with seven kills, a .438 hitting percentage, eight digs, two aces and two blocks, Jacobs notched five kills, a .400 hitting percentage and four blocks, Ratzlaff tallied five kills, seven digs, two aces and a block and Dyer recorded four kills and four blocks, hitting .273.  As a team, UMKC hit .409.

In the back row, Rhegan Spiegel had a team-high 10 digs, while Myers finished with 18 assists, three kills and three digs and Schomers had 20 assists and two digs.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again next Thursday when they head to Bakersfield, Calif., for a 9 p.m. CT match with CSU Bakersfield.
