KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (9-5) closed out the Billiken Invitational, splitting a pair of matches on Saturday, knocking off Murray State, while falling to UNLV in five sets.
Against the Racers, UMKC quickly took care of business, going up 1-0 in the match after Harrington ended the first set at 25-21 off a kill from Kynnedy Myers.
Kansas City then dominated set two, winning 25-11. UMKC went up 10-4 after kills from Harrington, Melanie Brecka and Myers and an ace from Harrington. The Roos then closed out the match with a pair of kills from Brecka and one from Harrington.
In the final frame, the score was tied late at 20-20, but the last five points went to the Roos, including two more kills from Brecka.
In the match with UNLV, UMKC fell 25-14 in set one, but tied the contest in set two with a 25-22 win. The Roos built a 9-2 advantage after a kill from Harrington, but UNLV closed the score to within one late at 23-22. UMKC, however, got a block from Alli Schomers and a UNLV error to tie the match.
UMKC then went up, 2-1, after taking set three, 25-23. The score was again close late as the Roos held just a 23-22 lead, but kills from both Harrington and Kristin Vom Schemm pushed the Roos to victory.
After UNLV claimed set four, 25-22, the two teams were set for a fifth set showdown. The Roos, unfortunately, only managed four points, including kills from Brecka and Harrington, as UNLV won the set 15-4 and the match 3-2.
On the day, Harrington tallied 18 kills, hitting .349, and 19 digs against UNLV and 12 kills against Murray State. Lukes added 14 kills on the day and Brecka finished with 23, including 14 in the loss to the Rebels. Schomers, meanwhile, notched 36 assists against UNLV and Rhegan Spiegel added 26 and 14 digs in each of the two matches.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they open up WAC play at Grand Canyon at 9 p.m. CT in Phoenix, Ariz.
