KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (5-10, 1-1) dropped a 3-0 Western Athletic Conference match on Saturday afternoon to CSU Bakersfield (8-8, 2-0) inside the Swinney Recreation Center.
“Our level of preparedness wasn’t very high,” Head Coach Christi Posey said. “Bakersfield is a good team and we needed to match energy from the beginning and we didn’t. They were could defensively and our players got a little discouraged, but we didn’t fight back like we needed to.”
Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) led the Roos with nine kills and a team-high 11 digs, while Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) matched her for the team lead with nine kills. Alex Ratzlaff (Hillsboro, Kan.), meanwhile, finished with eight kills and nine digs.
“We can do a lot better coming out and playing hard,” Ratzlaff said. “It’s always hard coming off a five-set match two days ago, but as the season goes along we won’t make the same mistakes. We will play harder and get tougher each match.”
In the opening set, Alli Schomers (Omaha, Neb.) opened the match with an ace, but the Roadrunners quickly moved in front and claimed the first set 25-18.
The Roos again led early in the second set, going ahead by three, seven points in. CSUB, though, reclaimed the lead before taking the set 25-22 for a 2-0 lead heading into intermission.
Coming out of the break, the Roadrunners jumped ahead 8-3 and went on to take the set 25-14 and the match 3-0.
For the Roos, Brook Jacobs (Peoria, Ill.) tallied six kills and Schomers added 21 assists and nine digs. In the back row, Mack Blatcher (Leawood, Kan.) finished with nine digs and Rhegan Spiegel (Savannah, Mo.) added seven.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they hit the road for the first time in WAC play with a 7 p.m. match with UTRGV in Edinburg, Texas.
