KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball returns to Kansas City to open up WAC play with matches against Grand Canyon and CSU Bakersfield this week. The Roos open on Thursday at 7 p.m. against the Lopes before a Saturday showdown with the Roadrunners at 1 p.m. with both matches set to take place in the Swinney Recreation Center.
About the Roos
The Roos enter this week’s contests with a 4-9 record on the season, including the team title at the Kangaroo Klassic where Emma Dyer (Higginsville, Mo.) was named tournament MVP and Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) was named to the all-tournament squad for the second time this season. Offensively, Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) (117), Harrington (113) and Alex Ratzlaff (Hillsboro, Kan.) (104) have all surpassed 100 kills.
About the Lopes'
Grand Canyon enters the match with a 5-7 record overall, picking up wins over South Dakota State, Eastern Kentucky, Niagara, Sienna and Syracuse on the season. Claire Kovensky leads the offensive attack with 130 kills, while Teagan DeFalco has added 118. Defensively, Emma Ahem (194), DeFalco (154) and Kovensky (130) have all topped the 100 digs mark.
About the Roadrunners
CSU Bakersfield comes into the weekend with a 6-8 mark on the season with wins over San Francisco, Montana, Northern Arizona, South Dakota State, Valparaiso and Louisiana-Monroe. Four Roadrunners have topped the 100 kill mark, led by Haylee Roberts 135, while Fabiana Andrade (330 assists) and Sidney Wicks (227) set up the offense. In the back row, Emily Lopes tops the team with 292 digs, while two other Runners have topped 100 digs.
The Roos hit the road for the first time in WAC play when they head to Edinburg, Texas for a 7 p.m. match with UTRGV on Sep. 28 and a 2 p.m. match with New Mexico State on Sep. 30.
