MANHATTAN, Kan. – The UMKC volleyball team (4-6) came out hot in its match with Kansas State (5-5), taking the opening set 25-21, before eventually falling 3-1 to the host Wildcats on Tuesday night at the Ahearn Field House.

“I was pleased at the level of fight and courage with which the team played tonight,” Head Coach Christi Posey said.  “The first set is an indication of how well we can play against quality opponents. The next step in the learning process is to maintain a better level of consistency.”

Freshman Alli Schomers (Omaha, Neb.) led the Roos in the loss notching her second straight double-double and the third in her last four matches with 25 assists, 10 digs, four kills and three blocks, while sophomore Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) also notched a double-double with 10 kills, 12 digs and two blocks.

In the opening set, UMKC jumped out to a 4-0 advantage, getting a kill from Harrington, an ace from sophomore Rhegan Spiegel (Savannah, Mo.) and a block from Schomers and sophomore Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) during the opening rally.  K-State clawed back to go ahead 8-7 in the set, but a kill from junior Brooke Jacobs (Peoria, Ill.) and a block from junior Emma Dyer (Higginsville, Mo.) put the Roos back in front. After the Wildcats then evened the match at 9-9, kills from freshman Alex Ratzlaff (Hillsboro, Kan.) and Dyer started 7-1 run that Schomers and Sadler capped with another combo block.  Three times more Kansas State would pull back even with the Roos, including late at 19-19, but three kills from Dyer down the stretch sealed the first set victory, 25-21 for UMKC.

In the second set, the Roos hung close early on, trailing by just one, seven points in, before the Wildcats knotted the match up at one set apiece with a 25-11 win.

K-State would then go on to take the next two sets from UMKC by identical 25-18 scores to come away with the 3-1 match victory.

In the match, Sadler tallied six kills and six blocks, while Jacobs finished with four kills and four blocks and Dyer notched six kills and three blocks.

In the back row, Spiegel recorded 12 digs and two aces, with Ratzlaff and fellow freshman Mack Blatcher (Leawood, Kan.) each adding nine.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again when they close out their preseason slate in Peoria, Ill., for the CEFCU Invitational on Sep. 15-16 with matches against Connecticut, Bradley and South Dakota State.
