KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC women’s basketball team will officially begin the 2017-18 regular season with a road contest at Western Illinois on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. CT.
Friday’s matchup will serve as the first official game of the Jacie Hoyt era, as the first-year head coach looks kick off her tenure with a challenging road victory. Samantha Waldron (Omaha, Neb.) will be relied upon to lead the team in the upcoming campaign. A Presesaon All-WAC Second-Team selection, Waldron returns as the leading scorer from a season ago, averaging 11.9 points while also dishing out 1.5 assists per game.
The Roos defense will be tested as Western Illinois returns eight players from the 2016-17 squad that averaged 80 points per game, good for 11th in the NCAA. The Leathernecks have a veteran squad with six seniors and were picked to finish second in the Summit League after claiming the league title last season. UMKC will need to keep tabs on senior guard Emily Clemens was selected as the Preseason Conference Player of the Year after averaging 18.9 points and 7.3 assists per game last season.
The Roos emerged victorious over William Jewell in their lone exhibition game of the season, defeating the Cardinals 75-64 at Swinney Recreation Center. Four UMKC players – Waldron, Kristen Moore (Chicago, Ill.), Aries Washington (Kansas City, Mo.), Kiana Law (Pittsburgh, Pa.) – scored in double figures, with Law leading the way putting up 17 points and grabbing six rebounds. UMKC last matched up with Western Illinois last season, falling by a final score of 78-65 on the Roos’ home court.

The Roos will follow up Friday’s contest with five consecutive road games spanning over the month of November. UMKC will travel to Nebraska (Nov. 14), Tulsa (Nov. 18), Iowa State (Nov. 20), Illinois State (Nov. 26) before concluding the road stretch with a trip to take on Kansas (Nov. 29).
