KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (20-8, 11-3) picked up a 3-0 win on Saturday afternoon at the Swinney Recreation Center over Seattle U (9-18, 2-12) on Senior Day.  With the win, the Roos tied the school record for the second most wins in program history and moved into a tie for the WAC lead heading into the final weekend of the season.

In the match, Tyrecia Lukes led the offense with 10 kills, hitting .588, while adding three blocks and Melanie Brecka added nine kills, hitting .208 with three digs, a block and an ace.

UMKC started slow in the opening set as the score was tied midway through at 13-13.  The Roos, though, reeled off the next five points, getting a kill from Emma Dyer and a pair of kills from Brecka.  The Redhawks closed back to within three late at 21-18, but a dump kill from Kynnedy Myers gave the opening set to UMKC, 25-21.

The Roos followed in set two with a 25-22 win that pushed the lead to 2-0.  After falling behind 5-0, the Roos fought all the way back to tie the set at 17-17 on a block by Lukes and Alicia Harrington.  After an SU point, a Redhawk error and a kill from Brecka put UMKC in front for the first time, but Seattle U would again reclaim the lead at 21-20.  Kansas City, however, allowed just one more point the rest of the set and a block assist from Dyer and Brooke Jacobs and a solo block from Jacobs capped the set.

The Roos then finished off the match with a 25-22 third set win.  The two teams again played tight early as UMKC led by just one at 13-12.  Three Dyer kills and one from Brecka over the next four points, though, pushed the lead to five for Kansas City.  SU again closed late, pulling to within one at 23-22, but back-to-back kills from Lukes ended the match for UMKC.

For the Roos, Dyer finished with seven kills, hitting .385, and four blocks and Jacobs added five kills and four blocks.

Defensively, Harrington finished with nine digs, three blocks and five kills and Alex Ratzlaff chipped in four kills, 10 digs, a block and an ace, while Rhegan Spiegel finished with 20 digs, including the 1,000th of her career.

Setting up the offense, Alli Schomers had 19 assists and three digs and Myers added 16 assists, five digs, two kills and an ace.

Prior to the match, the Roos honored seniors Dyer, Myers and Jacobs in their last home match for Senior Day.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they head to Las Cruces, N.M., to take on New Mexico State at 7 p.m. CT.
