About the Roos

After picking up a 3-0 shutout win over New Mexico State in their lone match last week, UMKC rolls into the weekend riding a season-best four-game winning streak as they continue their pursuit of capturing a WAC regular season championship for a second consecutive year. The wins have come in overly convincing fashion as the team has outscored its previous four opponents by a tally of 13-2.

In what has been a common theme throughout most of the 2018 season, the Roos’ attack has refused to slow down after moving through the first two weeks of WAC play. The team leads the conference by a wide margin with 35 goals on the year and sits tied with Utah Valley for a league-best 3.33 goals per game in WAC matches. The club has tallied 13 goals over the past four contests and look to continue their success on the attacking end.

Perhaps the most important aspect of high-powered UMKC offense has been the luxury of having four different players who are all capable of finding the net. The dynamic combination of Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.), Lexie Howard (Kearney, Mo.), Reighan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.) and Rylan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.) have stuck for a total of 28 goals and 29 assists on the season. All four players rank among the WAC top-six in goals and assists. Finding a way to shut down all four has proven to be a next to impossible task for opponents this season.

Recently, UMKC has matched their offensive success with a string of tremendous defensive efforts in putting together complete team wins. The club has gone three games without surrendering a goal and have allowed just five scores over their previous six matches. The Roos’ rank second in the WAC with 15 goals allowed on the entire season and are the only team in the conference yet to surrender an opponent score in league contests.

Scouting the Lancers

In their first season competing in the WAC, California Baptist (10-2-1, 3-1 WAC) has made a strong argument for being a legitimate conference contender headed into the final weeks of the regular season. After dropping the conference opener to Seattle U, the team enters the contest with UMKC riding a three-game win streak with a combined score of 10-0.

The Lancers have played exceptionally well on both halves of the field this season, trailing only the Roos in the WAC with 27 goals scored and pacing the conference in allowing just 11 opponent scores along with registering seven shutouts. CBU also leads the WAC with 18.8 shots per game and 75 corner kicks on the year.

CBU is led offensively by senior midfielder Desarae Felix, who leads the team with eight goals and 19 points through 13 matches. Her eight scores sits third-most in the WAC while her point total also ranks among the top-five in conference, making her a key target for the UMKC defensive line to cover.

Beyond Felix, the Lancers have a number of players who have shown the ability to find the net. A total of 11 different players have registered goals on the season, six of whom have accounted for multiple scores. CBU has been red-hot offensively of late as well, striking for 16 scores over their previous six contests. The well-balanced attack should prove to be one of the most challenging attacks to stop for the Roos in 2018.

CBU has used a pair of goalkeepers through 13 matchups this season but appears to have set in on Carissa Christensen as the starting keeper. The Texas Tech graduate transfer has made the team’s last three starts in net and has come through with three consecutive shutouts, making five saves during stretch.

Scouting the Lopes

Grand Canyon (4-11, 1-2 WAC) heads into the weekend fresh off a pair of shutout losses to UT Rio Grande Valley and California Baptist last week. A road matchup at Chicago State awaits the team prior to squaring off with UMKC on Sunday.

Unlike CBU, the Lopes have had a difficult time generating offense throughout the 2018 season, ranking seventh in the WAC with 14 goals and an average of 0.93 goals per game. A pair of forwards – McKenzie Cook and Camryn Larson – have found the most success on the attacking end, scoring a team-high four goals apiece and will likely draw heavy attention from the UMKC back line.

Defensively, the GCU has been far more productive through 15 matches on the season, sitting square in the middle of the WAC with 24 goals allowed and averaging 1.56 opponent scores per match. While they have struggled to put together solid defensive efforts over a stretch of several matches, the Lopes have allowed one goal or fewer in eight matchups, hitting the mark in two of their last three games.

Redshirt senior goalkeeper Abby Burton has been a large factor in what success the Lopes have had on the season. Burton ranks sixth in the WAC with a .739 save percentage and has been tested frequently, racking up 68 saves on the year which sits as second-most in the conference.
