KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Head Coach Christi Posey and UMKC volleyball announced the addition of four Roos, Mimi Dunda, Kristin Vom Schemm and Mikala Wells to the 2018 squad.

“With the addition of Mikala this spring and the new members of our 2018 Roo Family, our enthusiasm is high for a memorable season,” Posey said.  “We were able to add solid depth to several positions, yet the quality of character and commitment to excellence these players will provide is that much more meaningful.  There will be great learning taking place and our current players will be part of that teaching process.  We are very excited about the vision of UMKC volleyball.”

Signing National Letters of Intent to continue their educations and playing careers are Dunda and Vom Schemm.

Dunda comes to Kansas City from Grimsby, Ontario, Canada where she served as a middle hitter on the No. 1 ranked club team in the province.  She was Junior Women’s Athlete of the Year in both 2015 and 2016 and helped her high school to a SOSSA championship in 2016, while being named volleyball MVP in 2015.

“Mimi has such great potential to have a tremendous career here at UMKC,” Posey said.  “A late comer to the game, Mimi shares a great work ethic with her athletic family. Both brothers were star hockey players in Canada and Mimi is excited to make herself known as a tough competitor as well.”

Vom Schemm joins the Blue & Gold out of the College of Central Florida and Pascal Gymnasium in Wuerselen, Germany.  As a freshman outside hitter in 2016, she helped lead CF to a sixth-straight Mid-Florida Conference title, appearing in 30 matches.  She recorded 10 or more digs in seven matches with season-best outings of 14 digs vs Polk State College and Santa Fe College in the FCSAA State Volleyball Tournament and recorded career-best 12 kills vs St. Petersburg College (11/5) in the state tournament.  As a sophomore, she appeared in 21 matches, posting 118 kills (2.11 k/s), while hitting .169 with 124 digs (2.21 d/s).

“Kristin is very skilled. She has a great presence on the court and brings a maturity and quiet leadership to our team,” Posey said.  “She has quality experience and competed at a high level in her youth.  She works hard on and off the court with great willingness to impact her team.”

Also joining the squad is George Mason transfer Wells.

Wells returns to the area after the Topeka, Kan., native spent a year in Fairfax, Va., as a Patriot.  During her two seasons at George Mason, the outside hitter appeared in 48 matches, with 353 kills (2.37 k/s) and 274 digs (1.84 d/s).  Last season, she was named to the Towson Invitational All-Tournament Team, while finishing with a career-high 20 kills as a freshman against Bucknell.  As a prep, Wells was named the 2015 Centennial League Player of the Year after registering 277 kills, 252 digs and 53 aces.  Following the season, she was selected to play in the 2016 Kansas Volleyball Association All-Star match.

“Mikala is an athletic and smart attacker with a terrific arm,” Posey said.  “She will add much needed depth to our outside hitter position – having transferred at semester, she immediately acclimated herself to our team and to the expectations of our program as she is so coachable and outgoing.  Our team embraced her right from the start.”
