SEATTLE, Wash. – The UMKC volleyball team (9-18, 5-9) fell to Seattle U (11-16, 7-7) in Western Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon to close out the regular season.
Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) led the Roos in the match, tallying 11 kills, six digs and two blocks, while Alli Schomers (Omaha, Neb.) finished with 15 assists, nine digs, three kills and two blocks.
In the opening set, UMKC fell behind early but closed to within one midway through the set at 16-15 after a kill from Harrington and a Redhawk error. UMKC, however, could get no closer as Seattle won the first set 25-19.
In the second set, the Roos kept the match tight early as they trailed by just one at 9-8 on another Harrington kill. Seattle, however, again pulled away, taking the second set by an identical 25-19 score.
Seattle U then closed out the match with a 25-21 third set win. In the set, the Roos built an early 4-1 lead, getting a pair of kills from Alex Ratzlaff (Hillsboro, Kan.) during the opening stretch. SU fought back to take the lead at 8-7, but UMKC would not go away as the Roos recaptured the advantage at 13-12 on another kill from Ratzlaff. UMKC continued to lead at 15-14, but was unable to hold on as the Redhawks claimed the set and the match.
For the Roos, Ratzlaff finished with five kills four digs and an ace, while Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) registered five kills and three blocks. Kynnedy Myers (Rose Hill, Kan.) added 13 assists and four digs and Rhegan Spiegel (Savannah, Mo.) chipped in 12 digs and four assists. At the net, Alexia Morey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) notched six blocks and two kills and Brook Jacobs (Peoria, Ill.) recorded seven kills, four blocks and four digs.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they open up the WAC Tournament in Edinburg, Texas, as the No. 6 seed when they face No. 3 seed Utah Valley at 7 p.m. CT.
