KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (6-12, 2-3) picked up its second WAC win of the season on Friday evening when it took down Chicago State (10-11, 1-4) 3-0 at the Swinney Recreation Center.

“I was pleased with our point scoring,” Head Coach Christi Posey said.  “Our blocking and digging tonight was good and there were moments offensively when we were much better.  We are getting more confidence and getting back on the right track.  We weren’t perfect tonight, but we had more ‘better’ moments than we did bad moments.”

Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) paced the Roos with a team-high 14 kills, 10 digs, three blocks and two aces, while Brooke Jacobs (Peoria, Ill.) added 10 kills, hitting .368, with five blocks.  In the back row, Rhegan Spiegel (Savannah, Mo.) recorded a team-best 20 digs.

“Tonight’s win means so much for this team,” Harrington said.  “We’ve been working really hard.  After we had lost a few matches, we were a little down, but we wanted to come back and start working together again.  Tonight’s win shows our togetherness and our fight as a team.”

The Roos jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the opening set on a block from Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) and Alli Schomers (Omaha, Neb.) and extended it to seven at 15-8 on a kill from Jacobs.  The Cougars then closed the gap to as little as three, but Alex Ratzlaff (Hillsboro, Kan.) closed the match out with a kill for the 25-21 victory.

In the second set, UMKC matched the first set win with a 25-21 victory, this time scoring seven of the first eight points with Jacobs adding the capper to the rally.  The Cougars once again battled back, this time tying the set up at 16-16.  The Roos, though, would not be deterred as Sadler, Jacobs, Ratzlaff and Harrington all notched kills down the stretch.

UMKC then closed out the match in the third set, once again taking the set 25-21.  Chicago State led midway through the set at 15-13, but Jacobs, Ratzlaff, and Schomers notched three straight kills, along with a CSU error, to put the Roos up 17-15.  Four more times the Cougars closed the margin back to one, but UMKC scored five of the final seven points with Jacobs tallying the match ender.

As a team, UMKC finished with 14 blocks, with Alexia Morey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) contributing eight of them along with four kills.  Schomers finished with a team-high 37 assists and four blocks and Ratzlaff chipped eight kills and six digs.  Sadler, meanwhile, notched six blocks, four kills and three digs.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they welcome in Seattle U for a 7 p.m. match on Oct. 12 at the SRC.
