Roos Welcome in Trio of Foes to Kansas City for Kangaroo Klassic

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team returns to Kansas City for a trio of matches in the annual Kangaroo Klassic at the Swinney Recreation Center.  The Roos open up the action on Friday at 1 p.m. against South Dakota before taking on Rutgers at 7 p.m.  UMKC then closes out the event on Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. tilt against Northern Iowa.

About the Roos

UMKC opened the 2017 season with a 2-1 weekend in the Culver Governors Challenge in Clarksville, Tenn., before dropping a trio of matches last weekend in the Cougar Classic.  In the young season, sophomore Alicia Harrington (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) have each been named to an all-tournament squad.

About the Coyotes

South Dakota enters the Klassic with a 2-4 record after knocking off Abilene Christian and Western Carolina.  Hayley Dotseth and Rachel Schmidt lead the Coyote charge on offense, registering 67 and 59 kills, respectively.

About the Scarlet Knights

Rutgers comes into the event with a 3-3 mark on the season with wins over William & Mary, East Carolina and Sienna.  Offensively for the Scarlet Knights, Kamila Cieslik tops the team with 85 kills and a .394 hitting percentage.

About the Panthers

Northern Iowa enters the tournament with the best record in the field at 5-2 with wins over No. 19 Missouri and No. 18 USC, while falling to a pair of top-15 opponents. Karlie Taylor leads the Panther offense, tallying 117 kills through the opening two weeks of the season.

UMKC Athletics Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts

UMKC’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be collecting monetary donations this weekend at all home UMKC athletic events to put towards Hurricane Harvey relief efforts in Houston, Texas. All proceeds will benefit the Houston Food Bank and the Texas Diaper Bank. UMKC SAAC representatives will be at the UMKC men’s and women’s soccer matches at Durwood Soccer Stadium on Friday and Sunday, respectively, as well as the UMKC volleyball matches during the Kangaroo Klassic at Swinney Recreation Center on Friday and Saturday. Although UMKC SAAC representatives will not be at the neutral volleyball matches between Rutgers, South Dakota and UNI, a donation station will be set up in the lobby.
