KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s tennis team finished up the 2019 season with 11 wins while advancing to the semifinal round of the WAC Tournament for the third straight year in a row. Below is a recap of the season as well as the awards and accomplishments from the team.

2019 Regular Season:

  • 11-12 Overall Record
  • 3-2 WAC Record
  • Clinched the No. 3 seed in the WAC Tournament
  • Ended the regular season on a six-match winning streak
  • 7-1 at home this year

Doubles Play:

  • Yana Grechkina and Michela Xibilia led the Roos with seven wins at the No. 1 spot
  • Both players notched three wins in WAC play during the season at the No. 1 spot
  • As a team, the Roos produced 23 points in doubles play
  • Grechkina led all Roos players with 10 wins in doubles competition

 

Singles Play:

  • Katie Fries leads all UMKC players with 12 wins on the year from primarily in the No. 2 spot
  • Fries and Thanushree Vale also produced four wins in conference singles matches (No. 2 & 6 spots)
  • Four Roos overall had 10 wins in singles competition during 2019 (Fries, Riddhi Sharma, Yana Grechkina and Vale)
  • As a team, the Roos recorded 55 points in singles play

Katie Fries:

  • Highest winning percentage in UMKC history for singles play (.756)
  • Accumulated a record of 44-18 during her three years as a Roo
    • Sixth all-time for total wins in singles play
  • Highest winning percentage in UMKC history for doubles play (.564)
  • Accumulated a record of 22-17 in doubles competition
  • 2019 Second Team All-WAC Singles selection

Yana Grechkina:

  • 2019 Second Team All-WAC Singles selection
  • Produced 21 wins in singles and doubles play for 2019

 

2019 WAC Tournament:

  • No. 3 seed
  • Entered as the back-to-back WAC Champions (2017 & 2018)
  • Quarterfinals Round
    • Defeated Seattle U, 4-1
    • Vale and Sharma both notched victories in doubles and singles play for the Roos
  • Semifinals Round
    • Lost to New Mexico State, 4-3
    • Roos stormed back to tie the match 3-3 all before losing in the last set of the match
