KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s tennis team (11-9, 3-1) picked up its third straight victory on Saturday morning at the Amy Yee Tennis Center in Seattle, Wash., when it knocked-off pre-conference favorite Grand Canyon (6-13, 1-3) in a tight 4-3 contest.

The Roos jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match, taking two out of the three doubles matches.  Aliona Ladutska and Grace Ball picked up the first win for UMKC with a 6-0 win over Celina Buhr and Kylie Waschuk at No. 2.

The Lopes evened it at one set apiece when Melinda Johnson and Yana Grechkina fell at No. 1, 6-4, to Lana Rinaldi and Emilia Occhipinti, but the Roos No. 3 duo would clinch the point as Thanushree Vale and Katie Fries took down Valentina Mokrova and Autum Prudhomme, 6-4.

Grechkina quickly made it 2-0 in favor of the Roos when she beat Buhr, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4, but GCU cut the lead in half when Occhipinti won her match, 6-3, 6-2, over Johnson at No. 3.

Ladutska’s 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 over Rinaldi pushed the UMKC lead back to two, but a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 win by Martina Lo Pumo over Fries at No. 2 and a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6 by Waschuk over Ball knotted the match at three sets each with only No. 5 remaining.

At the No. 5 line, Vale dropped the opening set to Mokrova, 6-4, but battled back to force a third set when she took set two 7-6.  With the individual match and the overall match coming down to the final set, Vale prevailed, 6-3 to clinch the victory for UMKC.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow when they take on New Mexico State at noon CT in Seattle.
