OMAHA, Neb. – The UMKC women’s tennis team (4-3) picked up a 5-2 road victory on Friday afternoon when it went to Omaha, Neb., and beat Creighton (3-2) at the Hansom Tennis Center.
The Roos started off the match hot, sweeping doubles action to claim the point. Melinda Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) and Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia) teamed at No. 1 to beat Ashley Ishimura and Darby Rosette, 6-2, while Aliona Ladutska (Minsk, Belarus) and Grace Ball (Wichita, Kan.) beat Michaela Henne and Claire Embree, 6-4, at No. 2. At No. 3, meanwhile, Ioanna Lathouri and Katie Fries (Overland Park, Kan.) beat Laura Higueras and Erin Epperson, 6-3.
In singles play, Grechkina kept the momentum going with a 6-2, 7-5 win from the No. 4 spot over Epperson and Ladutska made it 3-0 in favor of UMKC with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win over Ishimura from the No. 1 line.
Fries then clinched the match with a 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2, while Johnson gave the Roos their fifth and final point with a 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 win over Rosette at No. 3.
From the No. 5 position, Thanushree Vale (Chennai, India) fell 6-3, 7-5 to Embree and at No. 6, Ball went down to Higueras, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8).
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Sunday when they host Air Force at 6 p.m. CT at the Kansas City Racquet Club in Merriam, Kan.
