LAS CRUCES, N.M. – UMKC women’s tennis (6-7, 1-0) defeated New Mexico State (5-8, 1-1) for the first time in school history on Saturday afternoon at the NM State Tennis Center. The Roos won three singles matches at the No. 3-No. 6 spots and claimed the doubles point to earn the victory in the Western Athletic Conference opener.

“The girls stepped up,” head coach Kendell Hale said. “Several girls are battling injuries and we were playing outside in 89-degree heat, but they brought their best. That’s all I can ask for. This sets the tone for the rest of the weekend and hopefully we can replicate tomorrow and keep it going.”

Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia), Katie Fries (Overland Park, Kan.) and Thanushree Vale (Chennai, India) have all contributed to early season wins. Grechkina beat Lindsay Harlas 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in No. 4 play. Fries won 6-1, 7-6 over Eli Arnaudova on the No. 5 court. Vale was victorious against Elizabeth Geronimo 7-6, 6-2 in No. 6 action.

On the doubles court, the Roos earned victories in the No. 1 and No. 3 matches to notch the doubles point. Melinda Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) and Grechkina beat Vanessa Valdez and Rebecca Keijzerwaard 7-6 in the No. 1 match. Aliona Ladutska (Minsk, Belarus) and Fries defeated Gabrielle Joyce and Harlas 6-3. Mariam Kurasbediani (Tbilsi, Georgia) and Vale fell by the same score in the No. 2 match against Rimpledeep Kaur and Marie-Pier Thiffault.

UMKC faces Chicago State at 10 a.m. CT. The Roos then return home to play five consecutive matches – including three in conference – at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City.
