SEATTLE, Wash. – The UMKC men’s tennis team (8-11) finished up the 2019 WAC regular season by defeating Chicago State, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon.

Looking to end conference play on a high note before heading to the WAC Tournament in a few weeks, the Roos established their play style early on in the match against the Cougars, which resulted in a near perfect outing in Seattle, Wash.

For the second day in a row, UMKC would run through doubles and singles play with ease and did not allow a single point the entire weekend.

Heading into postseason play on a hot streak, Ben Stride and Diego Giraldo once again paved the way for UMKC in both doubles and singles competition as the pairing would run away in their doubles set with a 6-0 victory in the No. 1 spot before taking care of business in the singles round with wins in the No. 1 and 2 spots.

The victory in doubles play improves Stride’s and Giraldo’s record to 14-4 on the year.

Tom Kruse, playing the No. 3 spot, displayed composure and determination with each return as he would go on to knock off the Chicago State opponent with a score of 6-3, 6-3.

This is the third victory in conference play for UMKC with the two-match sweep this weekend.

“Teams are high this year and basically it’s going to come down to who wants it most,” stated assistant coach David Heckler. “I think we found our line-up that’s working the most for us and our guys are peaking at the right time. We’ve been known to be a good post season team and have stepped up in the past. Hopefully we will do so again.”

Up Next: The Roos return back home for a matchup with Saint Louis on Friday, Apr. 19th at 1 p.m. CT. UMKC will be celebrating senior day as Katie Fries leaves the women’s squad and Hunter Clark, Ben Stride and Anil Patel will depart from the men’s team.
