KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City Tennis was well represented on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) academic lists, announced Thursday by the national association. On the men's side, junior Tom Kruse and graduate student Ben Stride were named as 2019 ITA All-Academic Scholar Athletes, while freshman Thea Dass, senior Katie Fries, junior Yana Grechkina and freshman Michela Xibilia were tabbed on the women's side. The women's tennis program also was named as an ITA All-Academic Team.
"I'm super proud of these recipients," said head coach Kendell Hale. "They have shown that they can compete at the highest level as well as juggle all that is required of them in the classroom. These awards are a result of many hours of studying and balancing their time between the court and classroom!"
The honor is a repeat effort for several Roos as Fries and Grechkina each collect their third-such ITA award. Also, Kruse claims his second overall academic ITA honor. The four individuals are the most for the Roo women since 2017 when the program had four.
This year the ITA saw an increase in qualifying teams and scholar-athletes. All-Academic honors were awarded to 940 teams and thousands of scholar-athletes.
All-Academic teams boast a team GPA of 3.20 or higher. ITA scholar-athletes must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
