KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC tennis hosts Saint Louis in the regular season finale Thursday for a men’s and women’s doubleheader at 1:30 p.m. CT at the Plaza Tennis Center. All seven seniors will be honored for their contributions to the program.
The UMKC men’s team (11-8) dominated Oral Roberts 7-0 on Tuesday afternoon in Tulsa, Oklahoma to win their third straight match.
Airam Castellano (Gran Canaria, Spain) – the reigning Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week – leads the men’s squad with a 13-6 record in No. 1 singles play. He is 9-2 in his last 11 matches. Tom Kruse (Flensburg, Germany) is 10-8 during his freshman season while competing at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions. Mike Psarros (Athens, Greece) is 9-4 overall with five straight victories on the No. 5 court. Vinh Pham (Lenexa, Kan.) is 6-4 this season in the No.6 slot.
In doubles play, Castellano and Psarros are 11-1 on the season and have won eight straight.
The Roos women’s team (11-8) has won two straight matches and six of the last seven dating back to March 3. Freshman Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia) also is the current WAC Player of the Week and has won 10 straight matches at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions, including a 3-0 mark on the No. 3 court. She is also 10-6 in doubles play. Katie Fries (Overland Park, Kan.) is 9-3 overall in singles action, including 5-1 at No. 5. She has won eight of her last nine matches.
The Roos will compete in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament on April 28-30 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
