Three Roos Garner All-WAC Honors

DENVER, Colo. – The UMKC men’s and women’s tennis teams had three players named to the All-WAC Singles Second Team for their performances in the 2019 season, the conference announced today. Diego Giraldo continued his stellar play from freshman year to notch a spot on the men’s side while Katie Fries and Yana Grechkina secured spots on the women’s side.

Giraldo, a sophomore from Medellin, Colombia, continued to push the envelope on his career at UMKC with a 14-6 record for the 2019 campaign. Primarily playing from the No. 2 spot, Giraldo posted an 8-1 record in the second slot while producing a 5-2 record in the No. 1 spot late in the year.

Heading into the WAC Tournament, Giraldo is currently 7-1 in his last eight matches and holds a three-match winning streak from last weekend.

Last year Giraldo was honored as the WAC Freshman Player of the Year in which he posted a 14-8 record primarily from the No. 4 spot.

Moving to the women’s side, Fries and Grechkina combined for 22 wins in 2019.

Fries, an Overland Park, Kan., native, delivered a team-high 12 victories in singles play while notching four wins in WAC play from the No. 2 spot. This is Fries’ second All-WAC selection as she earned a First Team All-WAC Singles selection from the 2018 campaign.

Grechkina, residing from Vladimir, Russia, played out of the No. 3 spot for most of the year in which she posted 10 victories and secured three wins in conference play. Competing in her third year at UMKC, Grechkina has now produced 35 wins in her time as a Roo.

In regards to the last two years, there have now been nine selections from UMKC on the All-WAC Teams.

Both teams head to the WAC Tournament for a date with Seattle U in the opening round on Friday, Apr. 26th. The women’s squad will take on the Redhawks at 9 a.m. CT while the men’s team will face off with Seattle U at 1 p.m. CT.

UMKC will look to clinch its second title in the men’s tournament while the women’s side will look to notch their third WAC title since entering the conference back in the 2013-14 season. The women’s team is currently back-to-back champions for the WAC Tournament while the men’s team won the title back in 2017.
