KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s tennis team (12-10) fell just short of their second straight WAC Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth when it lost to New Mexico State (16-8), 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Mesa Tennis Center in Mesa, Ariz.

NMSU built a 1-0 lead in the match with doubles wins at No. 2 and No. 3.  At No. 2, Tom Kruse and Diego Giraldo fell to Stijn de Haan and Mauri Benitez, 6-3, while the Aggies clinched the point when Hunter Clark and Anil Patel fell to Enrique Asmar and Louis Menard, 6-2 at No. 3.

At the top line, No. 72 Airam Castellano and Alex Pozo were leading 5-4 over Chris Goncalves and Luis Pliego Flores when the point was clinched.

New Mexico State moved the lead to 2-0 when Clark fell to Benitez, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 and to 3-0 when Kruse lost to Sergi Espias, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3.  The Aggies clinching point then came at No. 2 when Pozo fell to de Haan, 6-2, 6-3.

At No. 1, meanwhile, Castellano was trailing Goncalves, 4-6, 4-4, at No. 4, Giraldo was leading Asmar, 7-6 (7-2), 1-0 and at No. 6, Patel was leading Menard, 7-5, 0-5 when they match ended.
