Roos Down Vaqueros, Earn Spot in WAC Title Match

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s tennis team (12-9) picked up a 4-0 win over UT Rio Grande Valley (11-13) on Saturday afternoon in the semifinal of the WAC Championship to advance to the title match at the Mesa Tennis Center in Mesa, Ariz.

The Roos got off to an early lead, taking the doubles point with a pair of victories.

At No. 1, No. 72 Airam Castellano and Alex Pozo beat Dennis Boisseau and Mateo Schmit, 6-1 and at No. 2, Tom Kruse and Diego Giraldo took down Elliot Johnstone and Yehonatan Kaufman, 6-3.

In the final match, Hunter Clark and Anil Patel were leading Zane Kohrs and Clement Sarradin, 4-3, when the point was decided.

Patel quickly made it 2-0 in favor of the Roos with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Schmit at No. 6, and Kruse moved UMKC to the brink with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Johnstone at No. 3.

Castellano then clinched the match for UMKC with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Boisseau at No. 1.

At No. 2, Pozo was trailing Kaufman, 6-4, 1-0, at No. 4, Giraldo was leading Sarradin, 6-3, 1-2 and at No. 5, Clark was trailing Kohrs, 7-5. When the match was clinched.

The Blue & Gold will take on New Mexico State tomorrow at 3 p.m. CT with a berth in the NCAA Tournament on the line.
