Castellano and Giraldo Notch Wins in Loss to Bulldogs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s tennis team (8-9) dropped its match with Drake (13-12), 5-2, on Saturday night at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

In doubles play, the Bulldogs claimed all three matches.  No. 72 Airam Castellano and Alex Pozo fell at No. 1 to Barny Thorold and Vinny Gillespie, 6-4, while at No. 2, Diego Giraldo and Tom Kruse lost to Finley Hall and Ben Clark by an identical 6-4 margin.  At No. 3, meanwhile, Hunter Clark and Anil Patel went down 6-2 to Ben Woods and Tom Hands.

In singles play, the Roos picked up a pair of victories with Castellano taking down Thorold, 7-6, 6-3 from the top spot and Girlado beating Clark, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4.

In the other singles matches, Kruse fell to Hands, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 and Patel went down to Freddie Powell, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6. 

At No. 2, meanwhile, Pozo lost to Gillespie, 6-4, 7-6 and at No. 5, Clark fell in his match with Wood, 6-3, 6-4.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again next weekend when they head to Chicago, Ill., for the second WAC cluster on Apr. 13-14 against New Mexico State and UT Rio Grande Valley.
