UMKC Begins Home Stand with Chicago State

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s basketball team returns home to host Chicago State on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT. The game will be played at Municipal Auditorium as part of a doubleheader with the men’s basketball team.

This will be the first meeting of the season between the Roos and the Cougars. UMKC will travel to Chicago, Ill., for the regular season finale on March 4.

About the Roos

UMKC (6-17, 1-9) is led in scoring by junior Samantha Waldron (Omaha, Neb.), who is averaging 12.6 points per game, shooting 40.4 percent (105-for-260) from the field, including 34.3 percent (46-for-134) from behind the three-point arc. Junior Kiana Law (Pittsburgh, Pa.) is leading the team in boards, grabbing 6.3 per game.

As a team, the Roos are currently second in the WAC in field goal percentage (40.8 percent), fourth in offensive rebounds (13.2 per game) and sixth in blocked shots (2.1 per game) and assists (12.0 per game).

Redshirt junior India Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) made her second game-winner of the season in the 66-63 win over Utah Valley. Her half-court heave banked in off the glass as time expired in the fourth quarter to give the Roos the victory on Jan. 14.

Redshirt sophomore Kristen Moore (Chicago, Ill.) recorded a career-high 22 points in the loss to Seattle on Jan. 12 and scored 19 in the win over Utah Valley. She was given WAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors for her performance.

Waldron led the way for UMKC at the Roo Holiday Classic, totaling 55 points over the two games, including 37 in the loss against Southern Illinois on Dec. 19.

Johnson was the star of the show in UMKC’s road win over Abilene Christian on Dec. 3, scoring a game-high 19 points, including 14 in the second half and overtime. She shot 53.8 percent (7-for-13) from the floor, knocking down five three-pointers, including the game-winner in overtime with 1.7 seconds remaining.

In a big road win at Wichita State on Nov. 11, Law hit a shot in the lane with 1.2 seconds left in the game to give UMKC the 56-54 victory. Waldron scored 22 points in the game, knocking down 4-of-8 three points shots. Waldron’s performance against the Shockers earned her the College Sports Madness WAC Player of the Week honor on Nov. 11.

In UMKC’s season opener against Tulsa on Nov. 11, three Roos reached double figures. Law notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, Moore scored 16, and Lyndsay Leikem (Tucson, Ariz.) contributed 13 points off the bench.

UMKC will finish its home stand next week when CSU Bakersfield and Grand Canyon visit Swinney Recreation Center. Following the Roos’ game against Grand Canyon on Feb. 25, the four seniors will be recognized for their accomplishments.
