AUSTIN, Texas - The UMKC Men's Golf team finished the first day with an 11-over par 295 at the NCAA Austin Regional from The University of Texas Golf Club. Host school University of Texas and Pepperdine University hold the team lead with a six-under par 278. Junior McCain Schellhardt and sophomore Vitek Novak come into the clubhouse tied for 22nd overall -- first on the team -- with a one-over par 72.
The second round begins tomorrow with the Roos teeing-off at 8:25 a.m. CST on Hole No. 1.
Schellhardt, the WAC Golfer of the Year and stroke leader on the team, played well on Par 3 holes hitting minus-one on four opportunities. He was even in three-of-four Par 3's and sunk a birdie on hole No. 8. He needed the birdie on No. 8 to get down to one-over for the first round.
Novak has performed strongly thanks in large part to four birdies. He needed those after beginning his day two-over after two holes. After a double-bogey on hole No. 1 put him at plus-three with eight more holes to go, Novak nailed a birdie on hole No. 3 and No. 7 to end his day at one-over par.
The Roos are in a good position, just five strokes out of the top five low team scores. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
UMKC is appearing in its third NCAA Regional in the last four years and fifth overall. The highest team finish was 11th in the 2018 Regional in Norman, Okla.
