KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Head Coach J.W. VanDenBorn and the UMKC men’s golf team unveiled their 2017-18 schedule today, with the slate highlighted by the annual Bill Ross Intercollegiate at Milburn Country Club in Overland Park, Kan., on Oct. 9-10.
“We are starting a little later than we have in years past so our guys are excited and ready to get going,” VanDenBorn said. “The schedule presents some great challenges and a chance to compete against some of the nation’s top teams on some top venues. I think it shows our continued commitment to playing a strong national schedule while providing our players and opportunity to prepare for and make the NCAA Tournament.”
The Roos kick off the fall campaign on Sep. 18-19 when they head to Fort Collins, Colo., for the Colorado State Ram Masters Invitational at the Fort Collins Country Club, while the team will open October at the Jackrabbit Invitational on Oct. 1-3 at The Prairie Club in Valentine, Neb.
After hosting the Bill Ross Intercollegiate, UMKC will travel south to Texas for the Price’s “Give ‘Em 5” Invitational at the Butterfield Trail Golf Course in El Paso, Texas, on Oct. 20-22.
The Roos then close out the fall season with a return trip to the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational on Oct. 29-31 at the Princeville Makai Golf Course in Princeville, Hawaii.
“The competition to make our lineup this year is probably as open as it has been in some time,” VanDenBorn added. “We have to replace some guys who achieved a great deal here in our program. We have some youth and inexperience on the squad but our new guys have handled themselves well in qualifying and are already in position to make an impact on the team. I am extremely excited to see what this group can accomplish.”
The spring season opens on Feb. 26-27 when the Kangaroos head to the Oakbourne Golf Club in Lafayette, La., for the Louisiana Classics, while two weeks later UMKC will take part in the Grand Canyon Invitational at the Grand Canyon University Golf Course in Phoenix, Ariz., on Mar, 16-17.
UMKC then closes out regular season play with a pair of April tournaments including the Tiger Invitational on Apr. 9-10 at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo., and the Hawkeye Invitational on Apr. 14-15 at the Finkbine Golf Club in Iowa City, Iowa.
On Apr. 23-25, meanwhile, UMKC will aim for its fourth conference title and second WAC title in the past three seasons when it heads to Hutchinson, Kan., for the WAC Men’s Golf Championship at the Prairie Dunes Country Club with a trip to the NCAA Regional on the line.
“Obviously, last year was a heartbreaker at the conference championships,” VanDenBorn said. “To fall short after really battling back in the final round was difficult to handle, but I also believe our guys learned a lot about themselves and what they can be as a team. The WAC will present a great challenge this year. There are a number of teams who could win the WAC this year and then you throw in GCU becoming eligible, it presents a great challenge for our guys. Prairie Dunes is going to provide a great test and experience for us this year. It is a place some of our guys are more familiar with so hopefully that gives us a bit of an edge.”
