AUSTIN, Texas - In the final event of the 2018-19 season, the UMKC Men's Golf team posted a record-setting effort at the NCAA Austin Regional from The University of Texas Golf Club. The Roos finished 10th as a team -- the highest-ever school finish in the Regional -- with a three-round total 890 (295-302-293/890). The field was a competitive one with eight teams ranked in the latest Golfstat team poll, with host school and No. 6 University of Texas claiming the regional championship with a 25-under par 827 (278-274-275).
"I'm proud of the way the guys competed this week," said head coach J.W. VanDenBorn. "Obviously, every team at this point is good and if you don’t play well, you are going home. It’s disappointing when you play at this level and you just don’t have your best game for the week.
"We had some good individual performances round-to-round but we just didn’t consistently drive the ball well enough to compete at a level that matched our expectations coming into the week. I do, however, believe that we have proven that we are capable of competing in these regional fields."
The Roos were steady through the three-round tournament, starting off Monday tied for ninth in the first round before taking the 10th spot.
Speaking of steady, junior McCain Schellhardt was the UMKC leader from an individual standpoint throughout the event. He was tied with teammate sophomore Vitek Novak on the first two days, beginning at tied for 22nd, then tied for 27th before finishing at 25th. Schellhardt posted a 72 today to finish with a five-over par 218 (72-74-72). Schellhardt improved his individual finish from the 2018 NCAA Regional, where he was tied for 29th overall at a two-over par 218 (71-75-72).
Sophomore Paul Foulquie excelled on the final round, firing a UMKC-low two-under par 69 today. He finished tied for 42nd with a 10-over par 223 (75-79-69). He boasted the best individual jump, climbing up 15 positions from the second to third round.
Vitek ended up with an 11-over par 224 (72-74-78) to tie for 45th place. Sophomore Maxence Catherine (tied-50th) and senior Francois Lagraulet (65th) rounded out the UMKC golfers.
UMKC participated in its third NCAA Regional in the last four years and fifth overall. Prior to today, the highest team finish was 11th in the 2018 Regional in Norman, Okla.
The top five teams advance to the NCAA Championships May 24-29 in Fayetteville, Ark. -- Texas, Texas Christian, Clemson, Pepperdine and Southern California.
